Taormina - Hotel Timeo

"Taormina, le 2 février 1898,

Cher Albrecht,

Mon séjour à Taormina me ravit, je suis à l'Hôtel Timeo, à côté du Théâtre grec, face au plus beau panorama de Sicile, qui s'ouvre sur la mer et les pentes de l'Etna. Je ne me lasse pas de mes promenades dans ce village aux mille jardins, et je me suis mis à écrire, face à la mer, sur une petite table qui n'attendait que moi. Ce sera peut-être un recueil de poèmes ou un commentaire de Virgile, ou les deux...

J'aimerai savoir peindre autrement que par les mots pour te montrer la beauté de ces lieux comme des garçons que l'on y rencontre. Les belles images d'un photographe allemand, devenu mon ami, te montreront les uns et les autres, à mon retour à Berlin.

"Taormina, February 2, 1898,

Dear Albrecht,

I am so happy in Taormina. I am staying at Hotel Timeo, just beside the Greek Theater, in front of the most scenic view of Sicily, toward the sea and the slopes of Mount Etna. I am never tired with my walks in this village and its thousands of gardens, and I started writing, in front of the sea, on a little table which was waiting just for me. The result will be a collection of poems or a commentary of Vergil, or maybe both.. I would love to be able to paint beyond words, to show you the beauty of this place and of the boys as well one can meet here. The superb prints of a German photographer, who is working here and became my friend, will show you what I mean when I will be back in Berlin.
