Are the scenic ruins of the Greek Theater of Taormina haunted ? On this postcard signed by von Gloeden, three silhouettes can be seen: they are looking toward the sea. Two of them wear white tunics, the third one is pointng his right hand towards the horizon.

Is there another place in Taormina that could better express the art of the stage set-up, the baroque imagination, the aesthetic idea and the games of allusion to Classical Antiquity that are the trademarks of von Gloeden's photographs ?

But let us look more carefully at the man who has his hand pointed towards the horizon.

This man is von Gloeden himself. He is one of the characters of the photograph he is signing with his name. The more important was the stage set up, the choice of a view point from below, the visual contrast between the ruins and the sky, the contemplative mood of these three actors looking toward an horizon that is outside the frame of the photograph.

Another photograph allows us to discover von Gloeden's disguise. Perhaps his intent was to be Poseidon with his trident ? Or Hermes with his stick, and with well ajusted sandals ? Or a Roman gladiator ready to fight ?

I love this postcard and the photograph that provides us with a close up of von Gloeden's look. I love the imagination and the dream, the extravagance and the kitsch disguise that transform a respectable German baron into a character of the worlds he loved to create.
